The history of Turkish hammam

Unfortunately, the tradition of hammam is lost everywhere in Turkey. 100 years ago there were around 2,500 public hammams in Turkey. Nowadays, there are only a hundred left. This decline is mainly due to the installation of bathrooms in houses from the 1950s - 60s.

Most Turkish baths are constructions from the period of the Ottoman Empire, that is, over 200 years ago. Turkish baths (Turkish hammam) were essential for personal hygiene. It was also a meeting point (we met with local women to have fun, Ottoman women examined their future daughters-in-law). Nowadays, it is a place to relax.

Public Turkish hammams are never mixed (it is possible that they are in hotels or private baths where it is not uncommon to offer a mixed package. This is the case for our Bodrum Hammam outing.
