The collective taxi – the Yellow Dolmus in Istanbul

The yellow dolmus (dolmush) is a collective taxi mini-vans parked at strategic points, they wait for the customers at the stops. Collective bus taxis are only yellow in color, they can accommodate 8/9 seated people (no standing peassengers allowed).

Dolmus in service: they are in service 7/7 and 24/24, on both shores of Istanbul. Fast and economical, each minibus arrives to its final destination which is displayed in the front of the vehicle. They go to the four sides of the city. Each dolmus has its precise route on which you can step out.

How the dolmus, Istanbul collective taxi works: when you get in the vehicle you must tell the driver your destination the price differs depending on the length of the journey. A fixed price corresponding to the place of departure and arrival is however displayed in the bus.

Many people sit down first, and ask the driver again what the price is for their destination, the tickets and coins pass from hand to hand until they reach the driver and the change will follow the same path back to the paying traveler. There may be a bit of a wait at the start, because the dolmus will leave once its quota is reached, so as not to leave at a loss.

How much does a dolmus trip in Istanbul cost: the price differs depending on the trip, we can say that on average it is inbetween 5.75 tl 9 tl. This transport remains economical and practical.

The main destinations :
On the European side: Besiktas – Taksim / Taksim – Bakirkoy / Sariyer – Besiktas on the Asian side: Kadikoy – Uskudar / Kadikoy – Bostanci. There are also dolmus lines from the European side to the Asian side from Besiktas and Taksim.

Accessibility: the dolmus cannot accommodate people with reduced mobility. No bulky packs are allowed, it is hard to travel by dolmus for tall people as you have to bend down to get in and out. Children must be accompanied by an adult, pets are allowed in a cage provided for this purpose.
